Models Developed Or Improved By NAIAD
What this list is
The models on this page did not exist in their present form before the project. Some were built from the beginning; others are established techniques that were adapted until they answered a question they had not answered before, most often the question of what an ecosystem contributes to a risk, and how that contribution can be expressed in the terms in which decisions about it are actually taken.
That question is the thread running through the list. A causal loop diagram and a fuzzy cognitive map are not new techniques, but using them to establish what a group of stakeholders expects a measure to do, and where two groups expect opposite things, is what made them useful here. A damage model is not new either; what is new is a structure that can be applied to the change in the hazard produced by a change in the landscape, and can be read by the industry that carries the loss.
Models of how a system is understood
Causal loop diagram for the Medina del Campo demo — the representation of how the actors in the aquifer demonstration understand the system they are part of, used to establish where their expectations diverge from the model's.
Integrative Fuzzy Cognitive Map model for trade-off identification — the extension of cognitive mapping that allows a change in one part of a shared representation to be propagated through it, so that the trade-offs the participants perceive can be identified and examined.
Participatory modelling for networking interventions in NBS design and implementation — the use of network representations built with stakeholders to identify which interventions depend on which actors, and where the network has to be created before the measure can be.
Models of physical and economic response
Physical assessment of groundwater dependent Wetland Ecosystem Service (ESS) — the conversion of a simulated water level into a quantity of ecosystem service delivered, which is the step that makes a hydrogeological result usable in an economic assessment.
Metamodel for the Medina del Campo Groundwater Body — a reduced representation of the full groundwater model, built so that many scenarios can be tested at a cost that makes participatory work with stakeholders possible.
Damage modelling: the Catastrophe risk modelling structure for insured damages — the structure through which a change in hazard is carried into insured losses, so that the effect of an intervention can be expressed in the terms the insurance industry uses.
Where these are used
Every model on this page was developed against a demonstration area and is documented in a public deliverable. The aquifer models were built for Medina del Campo; the cognitive and network models were developed in the Glinščica catchment and the Lez basin; the damage structure was developed with the French public reinsurance institution and tested against national loss data.
