Flood and Drought Risk Reduction with Nature-Based Solutions

UNESCO-IHE has developed, in the context of NAIAD, a Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) on how to integrate the insurance value of ecosystem in environmental planning and infrastructure investment. The course “Greening Risk Reduction with Nature Based Solutions” is a six-weeks course where NAIAD DEMO Cases are used as “real” contexts for flood and drought prevention and mitigation.

The added-value of the course is the possibility to consult during the online-weeks course NAIAD experts in:

  • Eco-actuary
  • Risk perception and inclusion in system dynamics modelling
  • Economic valuation and co-benefits
  • Integrated risk assessment and meta-models

Greening Risk Reduction with Nature Based Solutions

The course on Greening Risk Reduction with Nature Based Solutions focuses on the insurance value of the environment and how to capitalize this value through nature based solutions (NBS). This course outlines main objectives and innovations from the on-going Horizon2020 and Interreg projects NAIAD, RECONECT and Building with Nature. It present the approachs of teams and DEMOs in the projects, as well as encourage debate on the definition of natural capital and how this capital can be included in business models.

The context of this course is flood and drought prevention and mitigation, and NAIAD case studies have been incorporated into the modules. The course not only aims to teach and update participants on the project proceedings, but also to highlight how these themes can be applied from their specific background, company, or area of interest. It also aim to gain perspective and refined focus through hearing and reading about participants experiences and practices.

Through this six-week course (online –  1 week offline), students have to produce reports on the discussed topics and their applications. At the end of the course, the students as a whole have to create a business model using the tools and concepts they have obtained for a hypothetical case study. Along the way, quizzes will ensure proper understanding and grasp of the material.  Deadlines for all activities are posted within each week.
