The National Institute for Marine Geology and Geo-ecology – GeoEcoMar of Romania, is a research- development institute established in 1993, under the co-ordination of the Romanian Ministry of Education and Research. The main activities of GeoEcoMar relate to marine, coastal, deltaic and fluvial environmental and geo- ecological studies regarding the ecosystems of the geosystem River Danube – Danube Delta – Coastal Zone – Black Sea; the environmental impact of anthropogenic structures that are located along the Danube course, the Danube Delta and Romanian coastal zone; the geological-geophysical-geoecological survey of the Black Sea as well as of other marine areas; study of natural hazards in Black Sea environment.
GeoEcoMar has participated in the EU FP 4, 5, 6 and 7, becoming also an European Centre of Excellence for the Danube – Danube Delta – Black Sea system under FP 5. It coordinated FP7 DANCERS project, aiming at coordinating science policies in the Danube – Danube Delta – Black Sea coast. It is present in two Horizon 2020 projects (EMSODEV and HYDRALABPLUS). Other significant international scientific cooperation projects have been performed in the GEF-UNDP Black Sea Environmental Programme, NATO Scientific Cooperation Programme as well as under the framework of bilateral co-operations, etc., GeoEcoMar having in these a central role of regional coordinator or national contact-point.
